A new bio-pic on the soul music legend James Brown is set to be released to the public this August. The movie "Get on Up", which has been 20 years in the making, was co-produced by Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger. He led the cast and crew down the red carpet when the movie premiered at the Apollo Theater in New York Monday night.

The soul power of James Brown hits the big screen. Brown's music, with its staccato horns and guitars and his often explosive vocals, brought funk into the mainstream and has influenced pop and dance music since the 1950s. Many of today's artists revere him, often using his beats in their own songs.

Rock legend Mick Jagger co-produced the film "Get on Up". For Jagger, who calls James Brown his friend, it was a walk down memory lane.

"He was always very generous with me and was very kind to me and he wasn't kind to everyone," Mick Jagger said.

"But he was to me. So I really appreciate that. And I saw him many times over the years. And I always kind of studied him, the way he moved and the way he always gave his best. And the way he always changed up his style and stuff. So I appreciate all the things he does. And so I hope this movie is a fitting tribute to him."

Newcomer Chadwick Boseman steps into the role of James Brown and received a kiss of approval from Brown's second wife Deedee.

"I was - you know, Mick Jagger just basically just invited me into, you know, partially into his world in a way. He invited me over to tea. I was able to listen to music with him for hours. We did a couple of sessions like that were he just talked about what was James Brown doing in the music. And how he was influenced and what he learned from him," Chadwick Boseman said.

James Brown died of heart failure at the age of 73 in Atlanta on Christmas Day 2006. The singer had many hits but his musical influence outweighed his chart success.

"Get On Up" will be released in U.S. theaters on August 1.
