A Peking Opera has made its debut to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Macao's return to China.

Named "The Soul of Macao", the performance focuses on a famous incident in the city's history - the assassination of a Portuguese governor during Macao's 450 years as a colony.

The performance tells the story of a villager named Shen Zhiliang, who kills the governor with the help of a group of locals, in response to a heavy taxation system, and the ill treatment of the city's citizens.

The performance was written by renowned Macao writer Mu Xinxin, and features famous Peking opera artist Tian Lei.

Although the tale dates back to more than 150 years ago, Mu has artfully combined modern Macao elements.

The show features Kungfu, as well as Macao's signature drunken dragon performance.

The President of the Administrative Committee of the Macao Foundation has highly praised the show, saying it embodies the Macao people's patriotism towards the Chinese mainland, and the open spirit of the city.

Audiences in Macao will get the chance to see the show from January 14th, 2015.
