Peng Shuai into first ever Grand Slam quarter-final

China's Peng Shuai reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career by beating 14th seed Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the round of 16 at the U.S. Open.

Peng would not relinquish her serve in the match and sealed a win with an ace on match point. She is through to the quarter-finals after a 6-3, 6-4 win. 

The Tianjin native was brimming with confidence, having beaten fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska and Italian veteran Roberta Vinci to make it the round of 16.

Peng started strong and broke Safarova early. She then then went ahead 3-love. The early break would be enough for the Chinese to win the first set.

Peng would not relinquish her serve in the match and sealed a win with an ace on match point. She is through to the quarter-finals after a 6-3, 6-4 win. 

China's only hope in the tournament again broke her opponent in the second game of the second set.
