Heavy rains are wreaking havoc across southwest China, causing two deaths in Sichuan Province and leaving at least eight missing in the neighboring Chongqing Municipality.
The downpours have battered most parts of Sichuan Province since Friday. By Saturday afternoon, 2,000 homes have collapsed in six cities and nearly 7,000 people have been evacuated.
Rain-triggered floods have swamped at least 10 towns in the cities of Dazhou and Guang’an, and two landslides were reported. In the worst-hit areas, precipitation exceeded 200 millimeters.
In Chongqing Municipality, a rain-triggered landslide in a village buried at least six people. Rescuers remain on the scene, searching for survivors and bodies. Changshou district was also swamped by 200 millimeters of rain that had fallen by Saturday.
A minivan carrying six passengers was washed away in Gelan township Saturday morning. One of the passenger is still missing. The local weather bureau forecast rain until Monday.
