The tournament, a century old tradition, involves competitors standing on a golden grid block and hurling black puddings into the air with the hope of knocking as many Yorkshire puddings, flat breads made of pancake mix, off a plinth as possible.
The puddings weigh around three kilograms and their targets sit more than seven and a half meters high. Each contestant has three throws. The contest celebrates the ancient rivalry that exists between Lancashire and Yorkshire, using a staple food from each of these northern counties.
The roots of the contest date back to a tall tale from the 15th century War of the Roses, when the houses of York and Lancaster fought for the throne of England.
