More than 600 representatives from some 30 nations and regions have attended the opening ceremony. The WFB has promoted practice of the teachings of the Buddha, and organized all sorts of humanitarian activities since it was founded in 1950.

It's a historic moment for both the Chinese Buddhist Association, and the World Fellowship of Buddhists. The Fellowship's General Conference has attracted Buddhist leaders from, around the world.

For believers, the significance is beyond words. The Chinese government has given its warm support. The opening ceremony has inspired many.

"I think it's the good opportunity to have the conference here and it's going to be a big success, as it's the first time we have the Buddhist conference in China," said Phallop Thaiarry, secretary general of World Fellowship of Buddhists General Conference.

The main highlight is the worship ceremony of the sacred relic, believed to be a finger bone of Sakyamuni, the Buddha himself. It was found in a 1,000-year-old underground hall at Famen Temple.

These Buddhists come from different countries, with diverse cultures, yet they share the same beliefs.

They are all praying for world peace and harmony.

"The conference in China is a milestone in the exchanges and friendships between Buddhists in China and the world. This will also help the Chinese Buddhist circle play a bigger role internationally," said master Chuan Yin, president pf Chinese Buddhist Association.

The 11th Panchen Lama, one of the two most revered living Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism, addressed the gathering.

He says the event is testimony to the prosperity of Buddhist culture in China.

"Through thousands of years of development, Buddhism has deeply melted into the Chinese culture and society. It has become the common precious treasure of the Chinese nation and the human civilization. Buddhism has played an irreplaceable role in promoting friendly relations, social harmony and world peace," said Baainqen Erdini Qoigyjabu, vice president of Panchen Lama and Chinese Buddhist Association.

To show unity and solidarity among different sects and nationalities, they have taken a big family photo.

And they've vowed to make concerted efforts to promote Buddhism world wide.

Shaanxi Province used to be the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, and the learning center of Buddhism. The event here, may help promote China's traditional Buddhist culture, and help the ancient Famen Temple to regain its name, as one of the holy places of Buddhism on the world stage.
