Cultural diversity certainly played a part along the ancient Silk Road, a trade route that connected civilizations across the globe. Now, Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi province and the starting point of the Silk Road, is hosting a major film extravaganza. The first Silk Road International Film Festival kicked off on Monday. A host of actors, actresses and directors flocked to the event.

A film festival linking China and countries in western Asia. The seven-day event is China's third international film festival, following ones in Beijing and Shanghai.

Famed actors and directors such as Yan Ni, Xu Huanshan and Diao Yinan attended the opening ceremony, held in the northwestern part of Xi'an. Xi'an was once the Capital of China's Tang Dynasty, and the eastern destination of the Silk Road.

A total of 147 foreign and domestic films, including documentaries, will be screened at the festival. Films from China, Russia, South Korea, Japan, Singapore and India will be screened, and four U.S. films will also be featured.

The opening ceremony features dance shows aimed at recreating the splendour of the Tang Dynasty. Mongolian, Indian and Russian dances are also performed.

The event will run until Saturday, and also features the "Silk Road Cup" film contest, a film culture forum, film trading and a film music concert. The organizers hope the festival will build a bridge between the movie industry of China and those of western Asia and Europe.
