Christmas may still be one month away, but the iconic Christmas lights on London's Regent Street, have already come on. Thousands of spectators packed the popular shopping area to witness the lights being switched on. And when it comes to such an important event, British pop stars can't be far away.

Christmas may still be one month away, but the iconic Christmas lights on London's Regent Street, have already come on.

Members of the British boy band Take That turned on the light display, surrounded by cheering fans.

A large fireworks display lit up the sky overlooking Regent Street and was followed by music performances.

Boy band 'Union J' were among the performers.

"We've all been to these light switch-ons before and now we're actually performing and our friends and family, who we were with a couple of years ago, are going to be watching us perform. It's an incredible moment so we're very excited," says Josh Cuthbert from Union J.

British pop star and former member of girl band 'Spice Girls', Emma Bunton also took part in the ceremony.

"No, I love it and I've actually been coming to Regent Street Christmas lights since I was a baby so it's just something for me that kicks off Christmas. I dragged Jamie along and we have a nice time," says Emma Bunton, British pop star.

People began to gather on Regent Street earlier in the day for shopping and street entertainment. The street was closed to traffic.

A major shopping destination for Londoners and tourists, Regent Street is owned by The Crown Estate, which manages the monarch's property holdings and is one of Britain's biggest landlords.

"People have been shopping on Regent Street since the 18th century and the success that we have on the street is to deliver retailers that the customers want to come to because there's a lot of competition and we know that," says David Shaw, head of Regent Street Portfold at the Crown Estate.

The lights running above the global fashion shopping curve follow the theme of the U.S. movie and franchise "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb".
