The New Year movie season has kicked off in China, with dozens of new movies expected to bring in box office receipts totalling 6 billion yuan, that's about a billion US dollars.

The New Year holiday season spans Christmas, New Year, and China's Spring Festival. The biggest and most lucrative time of the year for Chinese cinemas and film studios.

At this time of the year, one new film hits the big screen every three days. That can lead to some intense box-office battles.

"The New Year season is a time of fierce competition. The range of movies on offer is more diverse than ever before. There's great anticipation of films like John Woo's 'The Crossing', 'Gone with the bullet' by Jiang Wen took in 3 million dollars on its opening day," says Qin Li, manager of Nanjing Xinjiekou Internationa Cinema.

Film studios and theaters are staggering their release dates in order to maximise revenue.

Romantic drama "Fleet of Time" brought its release date forward a week while romantic comedy "Meet Miss Anxiety" postponed its release, also by a week, with both movies going after the same audience.

Movie fans are getting excited.

"There are two things about 'Gone with the Bullet' that interest me: the plot and its director, who is very famous," says a woman.

"I came to watch 'The Crossing', some scenes in the movie and the story itself are very attractive," says a man.

With China's Spring Festival coming later than usual, in mid-February, monthly box office sales are set to rise again.

And, there are the Hollywood blockbusters to come...such as Robin Williams' last film "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb", "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" and "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies".

Disney's "Big Hero 6" which swept across north America in the summer will also be gearing up the competition...movie fans can't wait.
