It's that time of the year again when students in China, applying for Fine Arts colleges, begin their entrance exams and auditions, usually the culmination of months, if not years, of preparation. And, for some, even relocation to gain a foothold in this fiercely competitive enviroment. Julian Waghann went to one of the country's top film schools to find out what it takes to be part of the elite.

It's that time of the year again when students in China, applying for Fine Arts colleges.

What do these A-list actors have in common? They are all graduates of the prestigious Beijing Film Academy, the cradle of generations of Chinese film directors as well as screen actors.

The Beijing Film Academy is known as the school of the stars, and students from all across the country are willing to go the extra mile, if not thousands of miles, to land in one of these classrooms.

Students auditioning for the acting major are asked to perform a dance, and a capella or an instrument in addition to improvisation and monologues. While the auditions are underway, one student outside is warming up and getting ready for her big day, a day that has already changed her life.

"I just have a small dream that one day I would be able to stand on a stage in front of an audience." Said Wang Yiduo.

Yiduo didn't get to have the audience she wanted, however she was rejected for arriving late for the audition. But she stayed because she didn't want to give up hope, rehearsing her monologues again and again.

"My mom quit her job in Shaanxi half a year ago to come to Beijing with me so that I can get ready for this audition. Since I was a girl, I started to study ballroom dance, painting and the piano and dance is something that really makes me happy." She said.

Many parents cheered her on while waiting for their children to audition. According to a 2011 national survey, only 30% of acting majors graduates go on to find employment in their field. But, in spite of the bleak statistics, students applying for the major have more than quadrupled in the last decade.

After an hour, students start to come out. The day seems to bode well for the mother from Harbin. And for Yiduo, it was over.

"I wish that I would've been given a chance and that we are not judged by just a few minutes in the audition room. I think to become an actor, one has to be ready to overcome many hurdles and challenges in life and I'm ready to do that." Said Yi.

This first day of her audition will for sure not be her last.
