Foreigners at media outlets and embassies in Beijing were invited to plant trees in the city's suburb on Thursday.

The annual event -- organized by the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television -- has been held for over a decade.

"Last year it was in Mentougou, this year in Huairou. I think it's good to change places. I feel planting trees is a good thing to do for the earth, for nature. Because now, there's a lot of pollution in the world, and in Beijing. I think this is a symbol of how we can act, how we can do something for the earth," said Emmanuel Dablemont from CCTV French Channel.

The Huairou district -- where these trees are planted -- actually hosted the APEC conference last autumn. 77 percent of the area is green. But nobody minds bumping up that percentage at the capital's north gate.

"I think it's wonderful, you give back to the community, give back to the environment," said Jay Kochiss from CCTV-News Channel.

For these 60 people, who either work in, or work with media based in Beijing, this was also a chance to promote understanding, and a spirit of good nature.

This tree-planting event has been held every spring since 2003.

But while Beijing’s environmental issues are becoming a hot topic, it is rather appropriate that the green effort on the outskirts of Beijing today should happen under a beautiful blue sky.
