It took eight years of struggle before China prevailed against Japanese invasion in World War Two, and this year marks the 70th anniversary of the war's conclusion. To commemorate the event, an art exhibition has opened in Beijing's Great Hall of the People.
Art exhibition remembering defeat of fascism in World War II |
For China, the Second World War began at least two years before allies in Europe joined the global struggle against fascism. Now, 70 years after the war's end, with 70 pieces of artwork, China pays tribute to the travails of its people in the face of Japan's brutal invasion and occupation that began in 1937.
Mounted by the Chinese Society for the History of the Communist Party of China, the exhibition soberly recalls the long fight for national independence.
"It's very important that our younger generations remember that period of time, and the struggle for peace and freedom," artist Jin Shangyi said.
The anti-Fascist war effort ended with unconditional surrender of the Axis powers in 1945. By then, China had endured enormous losses, but its sustained and dogged resistance contributed greatly to the allied war effort, especially in the Pacific region.
