Farmers in the south of Russia gather in a village to celebrate Cucumber Day.

Fresh cucumbers, pickled cucumbers, marinated cucumbers. They were all there - more than a hundred different recipes, in fact, according to local farmers.
To the sounds of traditional songs performed by amateur bands, visitors strolled among tables laden with various forms of the vegetable, scrunching and chewing all the way. There was even a cucumber-pickling workshop, where people could learn how to make a traditional Russian dish favoured as a chaser for vodka shots.
Cucumber Day is celebrated in many places in Russia. It's when residents begin the harvest and welcome the arrival of summer with singing and dancing. For locals, cucumbers are not just a source of wealth but of pride.
