Chinese sprinter Su Bingtian placed ninth in the men's 100-meter, but made continental history just by appearing in the race. That's because Su is the first Asian-born athlete to make the final of the event.

The crowds at Beijing's Bird's Nest Stadium roared as Su stepped to the starting line against the likes of Jamaican giant Usain Bolt, Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay.

Su got off to a good start. However, in what he later described as physical decline, Su finished in 10.06 seconds. That placed him last but he has every reason to be proud.

The crowd and media also remained euphoric because just reaching the final was an astonishing achievement for an Asian runner. Usain Bolt defended his title as the fastest man on the planet by winning the race in 9.79 seconds.
