Panpan sired around a quarter of all the pandas living in captivity in the world today, and has been dubbed 'hero dad'.

Staff at the center threw a birthday party for him and even made him a cake with ice and carrots. Hundreds came out to share the big day with him.

A world in a grain of sand

An international sand sculpture festival will open in east China's Zhejiang province on September 28. More than 30 sand sculpture artists from six countries are busily preparing.

There will be over 50 sculptures on display, including one from the Northwest Silk Road, Maritime Silk Road and Island Tourism.

Spaced-out students making their mark

Long March-6 blasted off in north China's Shanxi Province on Sunday, carrying 20 micro-satellites. One of them was designed by a group of university students. This micro-satellite is as big as a watermelon and weighs 12 kilograms.

The students said they joined the program and designed the satellite out of interest, but during the design procedure, they felt a real sense of accomplishment.
