China has made marked progress in encouraging and securing blood donations from its citizens to meet growing medical demands. More than 13 million Chinese people made blood donations in 2015.

That's according to official data from the National Health and Family Planning Commission which reports that a total of 4 thousand 4 hundred and 40 tons of donated blood was collected in the whole of last year. 10 out of every one thousand people donated blood in 2015, meeting the recommended standards as set by the World Health Organization.

According to the health authority, Chinese civil servants, college students and PLA soldiers have been particularly keen on donating blood, together accounting for the bulk of blood donations in the country. China has seen a steady rise in the number of blood donations, as policies are rolled out to encourage donation and relevant standards raised. Total blood donated back in 1998 amounted to less than 1000 tons.
