The 55-kilometer Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is scheduled to be connected today, making it the world's longest cross-sea bridge.

World's longest cross-sea bridge connects

Like its name suggests, it connects Hong Kong with Zhuhai and Macao. The entire structure includes the main bridge, an undersea tunnel and two artificial islands. Driving time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai in the mainland will be reduced from more than three hours to just 30 minutes.

The life span of the bridge is set at 120 years. To ensure flood prevention, 190 deepwater pile caps are buried under the seabed -- the first time such a large amount of caps are buried.

"How do these bridge pillars stand in water? Actually, there's a pile cap built beneath the seabed. It's innovative, with aims to reduce water cut-off ratio," said Su Quanke, Chief Engineer, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Administration.
