Since April 5 a safety network of armed police, SWAT police, civil police and police dogs had covered all stations ensuring 100 percent safety, a senior municipal police officer said on condition of anonymity.

The subway operator and police set up a system to make sure all bags and fluids were properly checked, he said.

Beijing police had handled more than 200 safety incidents since 2008, confiscating 85,000 knives and explosives and capturing 370 fugitives, he added.

The city now had 9 subway lines with more than 140 stations. The over 200-km subway system carries 5 million people a day on average and nearly 6 million people at peak times.
