Islands off China's coast are disappearing due to unplanned and crude exploitation, according to a five-year survey by the State Oceanic Administration (SOA), Xinhua reported. Land reclamation, dredging, and even bombing of islands are some of the destructive human activities causing them to disappear, the survey says.
The survey of China's coast, islands and tidal regions, also found that natural coastlines are being rapidly converted into man-made structures as urban development and port construction speed up.
The SOA said a comprehensive directory of China's islands would be published in the near future.
