Court rejects death appeal of Yao Jiaxin
May-20-2011

A local Chinese court on Friday rejected the appeal to the death sentence filed by a music student who stabbed a cafe waitress to death to cover up a hit-and-run.

The Higher People's Court of Shaanxi Province, northwest China, announced the decision to uphold the death sentence of Yao Jiaxin after a brief adjournment of Friday morning's hearing.

Yao, 21, a student at the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, was convicted of murdering Zhang Miao, mother of a two-year-old boy, last October in Xi'an, capital city of Shaanxi, to prevent her from reporting to police that she was hit by his car. Yao was sentenced to death by Xi'an Intermediate People's Court on April 22.

The case aroused widespread public outcry over the increasing reckless behaviors of the country's rich younger generation.
