Police from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan in a joint drug smuggling investigation confiscated seven kilograms of heroin and arrested three suspects around three weeks ago, the Ministry of Public Security said Thursday.
This is the first time that a drug smuggling ring operating across the Taiwan Strait has been busted thanks to evidence sharing between police from both sides, according to the ministry.
In July last year, a Taiwan-based drug smuggling group was found to have sent a box containing heroin through a Thailand-based cargo shipping firm to the mainland's Guangzhou city.
After being informed by Taiwan police, mainland police seized the heroin in Guangzhou.
On Dec. 29, mainland police handed over all the evidence including the heroin to Taiwan police, who then successfully arrested three suspects on the island that night.
According to the ministry, thanks to cooperation between the mainland's counter-narcotics authorities and Taiwan's law enforcement organs, a total of 110 criminal suspects, including 39 Taiwan residents, have been arrested and 1.41 metric tons of narcotics seized since 2009.
