Scientist gives cautious support to GM food

BB, March 8, 2012

Chinese agricultural scientist Yuan Longping, known as the "father of hybrid rice," has called for more prudent steps in applying genetic engineering technology to food, Xinhua reported. Yuan made the remark on Friday while commenting on a recently released draft of a new grain law. He said that he does not oppose transgenic technology and believes research in the field should be actively promoted. However, he stated that the safety of genetically modified (GM) food production and commercialization should be treated cautiously. He added that the application of transgenic technology should be restricted on all food production and that the government should take a scientific and prudent attitude toward GM food.

※The draft of the grain law, published in late February, limits the application of transgenic technology to principal grain cultivars. Sales, imports and exports of, and research into transgenic grain seeds should comply with state regulations, according to the draft. Yuan Longping said that the government should conduct thorough evaluations of the systematic safety of GM food and transgenic crops and maintain strict supervision over the application of the technology. He called for a rational attitude towards GM food from consumers.
