China has called for the proper handling of the detention of Chinese fishermen in the Republic of Palau, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. Foreign ministry spokesman, Hong Lei, said on Thursday that the Chinese embassy in Micronesia is investigating the incident.

A Chinese fisherman was killed after Palau police officers fired on his boat, accusing it of fishing illegally in the waters off Palau. 25 crew members are currently being held in detention. Chinese consular officials say they will take necessary consular protection measures for them.
