At least 30 people were killed when a powerful car bomb hit the Gwari area of northern Nigeria's Kaduna State on Sunday morning with deaths reported, a police source has disclosed.

The security officer who was not authorized to speak to the public confirmed to Xinhua that a score and half dead bodies were being taken away by emergency workers deployed in the area.

He said the security officers and emergency workers on a rescue mission to the scene of the explosion made frantic efforts to carry the mangled bodies of the victims, adding that several people were also injured in the attack.

Earlier, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesperson Yushau Suaib in a statement made available to Xinhua said the agency had mobilized its workers and other security agencies on a rescue mission to the scene of the explosion.

According to him, most of the people affected in the explosion were commercial motorcycle operators plying their trade in the area.

The blast affected a part of the All Nations Christian Assembly church located in the area during the morning mass.

The explosion also shattered the windows of the church and nearby houses. The security agents have condoned the area.

No organization has claimed responsibility for the blast yet, but a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram has been carrying out attacks in the west African nation recently.
