25 detained Chinese fishermen in Palau are waiting to find out if they are going to court over charges of illegally fishing in waters belonging to the Pacific island country.

One Chinese fisherman in the group was killed during a confrontation with Palau police last Saturday. Palau’s President has expressed regret over the death and has sent condolences to the deceased’s family.

Johnson Toribiong, Palau President, said, "Let me express my deep sympathy and condolences to the family of the slain Chinese fisherman. We’re willing to cooperate if the Chinese officials would like to investigate the matter independently. We wish to ensure the judicial process take its full course in a fair and just manner and if possible look to resolve it in a diplomatic fashion."
