Fiji has expressed appreciation to the Chinese government for its cooperation with and assistance to the Pacific island nation, the Ministry of Information said Saturday in a media release.
The release quoted Fiji's Attorney-General and Minister for Industry and Trade Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum as saying that "there are many areas of common interest between China and Fiji, and we look forward to exploring the potential that exists for us."
"For better economic and trade relations between Fiji and China, necessary measures need to be instituted which can be pursued through further dialogue," Sayed-Khaiyum said.
"In terms of investment, Fiji provides the necessary platform and invites investors from China in areas such as agriculture, construction, tourism and audio visual," he said, adding the numbers of Chinese tourists to Fiji has grown tremendously over the past few years and there is potential for further growth considering China's huge market.
On Friday, Sayed-Khaiyum met with visiting Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming to discuss opportunities for strengthening trade and economic relations between the two nations, which took place amidst Fiji's efforts to expand its relations with the international community for strategic and economic development.
Shaheen Ali, Fiji's permanent secretary for industry and trade, described the meeting as fruitful because relevant issues were discussed to foster and develop the economic and trade ties between the two nations.
