Toxic gel capsules confiscated

Xinhua, April 23, 2012

The Ministry of Public Security said Sunday that it has confiscated 77 million capsules made from toxic chromium-contained industrial gelatin, Xinhua reported. The ministry has arrested nine suspects, detained 45 and sealed 80 industrial gelatin and gel capsule manufacturing lines. The ministry deployed local branches in Hebei, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces to investigate the toxic capsule case immediately after the scandal was exposed last week, it said. To date it has investigated seven related cases.

Meanwhile, an employee of the Hebei Xueyang Glair Gelatin Factory was detained by police Thursday evening, after allegedly setting fire to the plant on instruction from his superiors, in a bid to destroy the evidence. The ministry promised to fully cooperate with food and drug administrations to conduct a nationwide overhaul of capsule production to ensure the toxic capsules are destroyed.
