40,000 affected by hail in SW China

Hailstorms have killed one person and affected more than 40,000 others in southwest China's Guizhou province since July 28, local authorities said Tuesday.

Hail has hit nine villages and townships in the Yi-Hui-Miao autonomous county of Weining in the city of Bijie, the municipal civil affairs bureau said.

The hail has damaged 4,557 hectares of crops and caused direct economic losses of 17 million yuan (2.67 million U.S. dollars) in the county.

The local government has provided affected people with food and water.
