Islamic State militants have released 29 Christian Assyrians, kidnapped earlier this week in northern Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the group have not yet departed ISIL-controlled areas in the northeastern Syrian province of al-Hasaka. The announcement comes after 220 Assyrians were kidnapped by ISIL on the 23rd of February, when militants stormed the town of Tal Tamr.

Assyrian leaders have conducted talks with Islamic State fighters through mediators to secure the release of the Assyrians. The other captives will reportedly be tried by ISIL jurists under Sharia law.
