A group of six gunmen sprayed bullets indiscriminately inside a bus as the victims were heading to their worship place in the morning, police said.

The gunmen, riding three motorbikes, fled after the attack at Sufura Chowrangi area. Reports suggest that the Jundullah group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif flew into Karachi to preside over a high level emergency meeting of security officials, the PM office said.

The Army Chief, General Raheel, Sharif and head of the Intelligence Agency, Lt Gen Rizwan Akhtar, have also arrived in Karachi to attend the meeting that will review the security situation of the city.

The Army Chief also cancelled his pre-schedule three-day visit to Sri Lanka due to the Karachi terrorist bus attack, the Army Spokesman, Maj General Asim Bajwa said.

Earlier the Prime Minister strongly condemned the gory incident and said the Ismaili community is peaceful, who has played a major role in the progress and development of the country since its creation.

"It is a matter of concern for me that the terrorists targeted the peaceful community," Sharif told a meeting of senior political and religious leaders in Islamabad.

The Prime Minister also announced one-day mourning in the country on Thursday.
