Authorities said the leak occurred near a highway tunnel between Kunming and Shilin and the situation is under control.

Part of the highway was closed after the incident.

Local officials indicated the leak may be caused by construction.

The pipeline was part of the branch of Myanmar-China gas pipeline project. The branch pipeline is 91.5 kilometers long and it began to operate on June 10 this year. The pipeline is expected to deliver 900 million cubic meters of gas every year for 7 million residents in Kunming.
