The shooting took place at Roye, Haute-Somme department in northern France, at around 4:30 p.m. local time, next to a supermarket where nomads camped, said Le Courrier Picard.
According to the local broadcaster Europe 1, an exchange of fire with an armed man in a camp of travellers left two gendarmes wounded. One of the gendarmes was seriously injured and died later in the day.
Security forces were on the site after being alerted of a volley of shots in the camp. Upon their arrival, a man opened fire at them before being arrested. The man was also injured in the shooting.
Three bodies of a man, a woman and a baby were found at the site where the shooting took place. They were believed to be killed by the same gunman who shot the gendarmes. A second child was seriously injured in the incident, according to the report.
