South Africa remains committed to its role, together with Tanzania, in its involvement in mediation efforts in South Sudan, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

"South Africa is also committed to contributing to the post-conflict reconstruction and development of South Sudan in ensuring sustainable political and economic development of the country is attained,"Zuma said in a statement distributed by his office.

He was speaking after warring parties in South Sudan signed the final peace agreement on Wednesday to end the almost two-year conflict that has wrecked havoc on the country.

Under the deal proposed by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the conflicting parties will form a new government. Riek Machar, leader of South Sudan's major rebel group and the former vice president, is expected to regain the post after he was dismissed in 2013.

Zuma, on behalf of the SA government, congratulated South Sudan's President Salva Kiir Mayardit on the signing of the agreement.

South Africa would also like to congratulate the regional bloc IGAD on leading the negotiations and ensuring a peaceful outcome for the benefit of the people of South Sudan, Zuma said.

He said South Africa will continue its involvement in the intra-party dialogue as a parallel process to the IGAD mediation.
