The Chinese government announced a new policy that will increase the country's supply of live pigs, Xinhua reports. Efforts will be made to ensure adequate supplies of live pigs and stabilize prices, the State Council said in a statement released after a meeting on Wednesday. The central government will invest 2.5 billion yuan in large-scale pig farms this year. Farmers will be able to receive a 100-yuan subsidy for each pig they raise. They will also be eligible for 800 yuan in compensation for every pig they raise that dies from disease or other external factors. The price of pork has become a major driver in rising consumer prices. In June Pork prices 57 percent higher than they were a year ago. "Stabilizing prices remains the top priority for our macro-regulatory policies," Premier Wen Jiabao has said. The move is expected to drive down pork prices and ease inflation worries, officials said.

Three bombs rocked crowded districts of Mumbai during rush hour on Wednesday, killing at least 21 people in the largest militant attack on the city since the 2008 assaults, Reuters reported. At least 141 people were wounded in the attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blasts, but the Indian government believed that terrorists are to blame. "The blast occurred at about 6.45 p.m. within minutes of each other. Therefore, we infer that this was a coordinated attack by terrorists," Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said. "This tactic is much more in line with those used by more amateurish groups such as the Indian Mujahideen, who have targeted crowded urban areas before," Stratfor, a strategic affairs think tank, said in a statement.

An enterprising Chinese man has come up with a solution for gadget-crazy people who desperately want an iPad tablet computer but can't afford it - build it yourself, AFP reported. In a 20-minute video posted on Youku, Liu Xinying works to the beat of metal music to assemble an iPad look-alike using computer parts, a touch screen and a case with a keypad. At the end of the video dubbed "DIY IPAD 3", Liu shows off the finished version -- an apparently functional tablet computer that looks like a thick iPad but runs on Windows. The 21-year-old from Shandong Province said that it cost him 2,000 yuan ($309) to make the tablet, and since he posted the video online a month ago, he has received requests from a dozen people to make them a DIY iPad.

A new Greenpeace investigation showed that Youngor Group, China's biggest integrated textile firm supplying Nike, Adidas, Puma and other leading brands, discharged hormone-disrupting chemicals and other toxins into the country's major water systems, The Guardian reported. Greenpeace also linked hazardous textile plants in the Yangtze and Pearl River deltas to Lacoste, H&M and half a dozen other international fashion brands, despite many of those companies' claims to have high environmental standards in their supply chains.

German administrators have impounded a jet used by Thailand's Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn for an unpaid debt from 20 years ago, BBC reported. The administrators said Thailand's government refused to pay a bill of more than 30 million euros to a now-defunct German construction firm. The Boeing 737 was seized by court order, a spokesman for Munich airport said. Thailand's Foreign Ministry said the seizure was "highly inappropriate." But Walter Schneider, the administrator for the now-bankrupt construction firm, said the "drastic measure" was "virtually the last resort." "The Thai government always stalled and did not respond to our demands," Schneider said. The German firm was part of a consortium that helped to build a toll road between Bangkok and Don Muang airport. The Thais claim a court decision is still pending on the debt, but the German administrators say the matter has already been decided.

>AIDS drugs could reduce infection risk

Drugs designed to treat HIV/AIDS can also be used to reduce dramatically the risk of infection among heterosexual couples, two studies conducted in Africa showed for the first time on Wednesday, Reuters reported. The studies, conducted on couples in Kenya, Uganda and Botswana, found that daily use of AIDS medications reduced infection rates by an average of at least 62 percent when compared with placebo. The findings add to growing evidence that the type of medicines prescribed since the mid-1990s to treat people who are already sick may also hold the key to slowing or even halting the spread of the disease. "Effective new HIV prevention tools are urgently needed and these studies could have enormous impact in preventing heterosexual transmission," Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), said in a statement.

China's Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway has experienced three delays over the last four days, with the latest taking place on Wednesday, Xinhua reported on Thursday. The Ministry of Railway blamed power failures for the delays. The problems posed no threat to its operational safety and the passengers on those delayed trains are safe, the ministry said.

More than one million websites closed down in China last year, according to Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, BBC reported today. Despite the closings, the overall number of web pages in China rose to 60 billion during 2010, a 79 percent increase from the previous year.

Scientists from the Tokyo University of Science have grown fully formed teeth from stem cells, the Daily Mail reports. The artificial teeth looked like the real thing, were sensitive to pain and could chew food. Each tooth costs around 2,000 pounds (20,000 yuan) to produce.

An Austrian atheist has won the right to wear a pasta strainer as religious headgear in his driver's license photo, BBC reported. Niko Alm, a Pastafarian, first applied for the license three years ago after reading that headgear was allowed in official pictures, but only for confessional reasons. Alm said the sieve was a requirement of his religion, Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The license took three years to come through and, according to Alm, his mental fitness to drive was tested.

>Sisters sue cemetery over grave mix-up

American sisters Evelyn and Hortense Edwards spent two decades visiting what they thought was their mother's grave only to discover it contained the remains of a stranger, Reuters reports. Now, the sisters are seeking $25 million from the Rosehill Cemetery in Linden, New Jersey for emotional distress caused by the incident. Mark Crawford, the sisters' attorney, said they discovered the mix-up after they complained about their mother's grave falling into disrepair. An employee looked up the plot in question; and then she said a man was actually buried there. The cemetery said it believed their mother was accidentally buried in another section. Crawford said the sisters want the cemetery to disinter the remains at a second grave to confirm the remains there are of their mother. But the cemetery said it will only do so if the sisters will take responsibility for disturbing someone else's remains.
