Vice premier hopes to maximize benefit of water diversion project

Chinese vice premier Zhang Gaoli on Thursday demanded more benefits fromthe south-to-north water diversion project.

The project, one of the country'slargest infrastructure schemes, was designed to take water from thesouth to dry areas in the north, including Beijing.

A good mechanism must beestablished to optimize transfer of water resources to serve thecountry's key strategies, including the coordinated development ofthe Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the development of the YangtzeRiver Economic Belt. The project must ensure water for Xiongan NewArea, according to Zhang, who is also head of the the State CouncilSouth-to-North Water Diversion Project Construction Commission.

Vice premier Wang Yang, who is vicehead of the commission, also attended the meeting, emphasizingwater quality and environmental protection during the process.

Both highlighted the importance ofhelping those displaced by the project.
