Vice premier, Estonian president meet

Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang discussed ways to promote bilateral ties between China and Estonia with President Toomas Hendrik Ilves on Tuesday at their meeting in Tallinn.
Zhang hailed the smooth development of bilateral relations and the ever-expanding cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries 18 years ago.
China, Zhang said, is willing to continue political dialogue at different levels with Estonia, enhance political mutual trust and respect each other on issues concerning their respective core interests.
China would also like to boost economic and trade cooperation with Estonia and promote cultural exchanges so as to consolidate their friendship and set a more promising prospect for bilateral ties, Zhang said.
The vice premier added that China attaches great importance to developing the comprehensive strategic partnership with the European Union (EU), and appreciates Estonia's efforts in this regard.
Ilves, on his part, said Estonia and China enjoy a sound basis for promoting their bilateral ties, and his country values its relationship with China.
The two countries should further promote cultural exchanges and strengthen cooperation in such fields as scientific research, technological development, and the port and shipping sector, he said.
Ilves said Estonia opposes trade protectionism, and is willing to play a positive role in helping boost EU-China relations, particularly economic and trade links.
Estonia is the last leg of Zhang's European tour, which has also taken him to Ukraine and Albania.
