22 passengers killed as bus falls into gorge in northern India

Some 22 passengers were killed and several others feared dead when a bus plunged into a deep gorge in Kangra town of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh today, a senior police official said.

"he accident took place near Haripur area of Kangra when the driver of the bus lost control of the speeding vehicle, which was on its way to Dehra Dun from Nagrota Suriyan and fell into the 100- feet deep gorge. At least 22 were found dead, some 48 hurt and many others feared killed," the official said.

The injured have been admitted to a local hospital while rescue operation is on to find those missing, he said.

Senior government officials have rushed to the spot and the state government has ordered a probe into the mishap.
