Japan's Teikyo University Hospital had confirmed another five cases of infection with Acinetobacter, an antibiotic-resistant bacteria, Kyodo News reported on Saturday.

The figure had brought the total number of people infected in- hospital with the superbug to 58 in the country.

Of the five newly uncovered cases, a woman in her 70s died in June this year and experts are currently studying whether her death was caused by the infection, the hospital in Tokyo's Itabashi Ward was quoted as saying.

Of the 58 people who have been infected with the bacteria since last year, 32 have died, including nine whose deaths were likely caused directly by the infection, the report said.
