Bangladesh is set to forge a closer partnership with China, said an envoy on Wednesday as the two countries celebrated the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
During the past 35 years, relations between the two nations have grown steadily, said Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Bangladeshi ambassador to China. China and Bangladesh established diplomatic relations on Oct. 4, 1975.
"We are engaged in meaningful cooperation in almost all spheres under a Closer Comprehensive Partnership of Cooperation," Ahmad said, while addressing an audience of some 500 people at a ceremony in Beijing.
The visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to China in March this year, along with the visit of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping to Bangladesh in June, provided new impetus to existing relations, the ambassador said.
"China is one of our most important development partners," Ahmad said, adding that continued Chinese technical and financial assistance had contributed "significantly" to building the economy in his country.
Bangladesh has always remained steadfast on her "One China Policy" and considers Taiwan and Tibet as integral parts of China, he said.
Currently, the annual two-way trade between the two countries is worth five billion U.S. dollars, according to the envoy.
"Our two countries are also engaged in meaningful cooperation in other areas such as education, culture, tourism, science and technology, environment, agriculture as well as defense and security," he added.
"We are close partners in the efforts to maintain and promote peace and stability in this region and the world at large," the ambassador said.
