About 400,000 residents have been advised to evacuate in Japan's northeast Niigata and Fukushima prefectures due to torrential rain, local media reported Saturday.
One man has been killed and five others are missing in the region, Kyodo News reported.
The Igarashi River in Niigata's Sanjo flooded, leading local authorities to evacuate 10,000 residents nearby. On top of that, 11 cities and two towns in the prefecture told a total of 380,000 people to evacuate, Kyodo said.
Several spots of the two prefectures have seen rainfall exceeding 500 millimeters since Wednesday, causing floods and landslides. Japan Meteorological Agency warned of more heavy rainfall later Saturday.
