Hu meets Bolivian president

Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Bolivian counterpart Juan Evo Morales Ayma reached broad consensus on development of bilateral links and other issues of common concern as they met in Shenzhen Friday.

Hu said China places great importance on its relations with Bolivia,which is an important country in Latin America.

"China is ready to work with Bolivia to carry out comprehensive and mutually beneficial cooperation so as to bring benefit to the people of both countries," Hu said.

Hu made the remarks as he met with his Bolivian counterpart Juan Evo Morales Ayma here Friday morning.

Morales is here to attend the opening ceremony of the 26th Summer Universiade to be held in this south China city of Shenzhen on Friday evening.

Hu pointed out that under the joint effort of both sides, China-Bolivia friendly cooperative relations have made positive progress from time to time. The two countries have continuingly enhanced political mutual trust, reached rich results in trade and economic cooperation, expanded cultural and people-to-people exchanges and maintained coordination and cooperation on international affairs.

Hu put forward a four-point proposal on further enhancing bilateral cooperation.

Firstly, Hu said the two countries should deepen the sincere and friendly political relations. He said China is ready to maintain high-level contact with Bolivia, increase dialogues and exchanges between the governments, political parties and legislatures of the two countries and understand and support each other on major issues of their own concern.

Secondly, the two countries should advance pragmatic and mutually beneficial cooperation. Hu said relevant departments and companies of both countries should continuingly tap into the potentials, innovate the ways, expand the area and lift the standard of cooperation. Hu said the two sides should expand trade, advance cooperation in the key areas of energy, mining resources and infrastructure development and promote cooperation on science and technology.

"China will continue to provide Bolivia with assistance within its own capacity," Hu said.

Thirdly, Hu said the two countries should carry out cultural and people-to-people exchanges by expanding cooperation and exchanges in the areas of culture, education, medical service, public health, sports and tourism.

Fourthly, Hu said the two countries should strengthen coordination and cooperation on multilateral issues. Hu said the two sides should maintain consultation and coordination within relevant regional and international organizations and on global issues of food security, climate change and sustainable cooperation.

Morales expressed appreciation on China for its long-term and active contribution to social and economic development of Bolivia. He said Bolivia attaches priority on its relations with China and will work with China to enhance political links, strengthen cooperation in the areas of economy, trade, agriculture, science, technology, infrastructure and culture and step up cooperation on regional and international issues.

Hu said in recent years and under the leadership of President Morales, the Bolivian people have made major achievements in the effot of exploring the route of development that is in conformity with Bolivia's national condition. Hu expressed appreciation on the achievements the Bolivian people have made and wish them even greater achievements in the cause of developing their own country.

Hu welcomed Morales to attend the opening ceremony of the Shenzhen Universiade.

Morales said he is honored to be invited to attend the opening ceremony of the Shenzhen Universiade. He said as a sports fan, he had been watching the Beijing Olympic Games, which is one of the most successful Olympic Games in history.

Morales expressed the belief that the Shenzhen Universiade will also be one of the best in the history of world university sports.

After the meeting, President Hu and President Morales attended the signing ceremony of a number of cooperative documents signed by companies and governmental departments of the two countries.

Since China and Bolivia established diplomatic links 26 years ago, bilateral relations have seen smooth growth. Leaders of the two countries have maintained frequent contact as mutual trust continues to grow.

Morales visited China shortly after he became president in 2006. During the visit, he held talks with Chinese President Hu. The two heads of state met again in 2009 at the sidelines of United Nations meetings in New York, the United States.

In recent years, China and Bolivia have carried out fruitful cooperation in the areas of trade, economy, culture, education, science, technology and sports. The two countries also conducted sound cooperation on regional and international issues. Bolivia has lent firm support to China on issues of China's core interests, including issues related to Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.

Recently, the two sides have expanded bilateral cooperation into new areas as China is to launch a telecommunication satellite for Bolivia.
