China pledges closer ties with Zambia's new gov't

Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo met with former Zambian President Kenneth David Kaunda in Beijing on Thursday, vowing to cement cooperation with Zambia's new government and step up the all-round growth of bilateral relations.
Kaunda is visiting China as the special envoy of Zambian President Michael Chilufya Sata, who assumed the presidency on Sept. 23 this year and formed a new Zambian government.
Kaunda told Dai his visit aims to send a clear message that Zambia's new government is committed to friendly relations with China.
Dai appreciated Kaunda's contribution to boosting China-Zambia relations, saying bilateral friendship created by the two countries' leaders of the older generations takes an important position in bilateral traditional friendship.
Hailing the progress of bilateral ties, Dai said the two countries had become important partners in recent years. China's assistance to, and investment in Zambia had facilitated the country's economic and social development and the improvement of people's livelihoods, and also helped Zambia's efforts to counter the global financial crisis.
China-Zambia relations face important opportunities for development, he said. "China is ready to make joint efforts with Zambia's new government to strengthen political trust, deepen cooperation, face up to various challenges and boost all-round growth of bilateral ties," said the councilor.
Calling the two countries reliable good friends, Kaunda said China had made great contributions to supporting Zambia and other African countries' struggles against colonialism and racism. The renowned Tanzania-Zambia railway was built with Chinese aid, he added.
Kaunda said he believes Zambia-China friendship will see continuous consolidation and development with joint efforts of both sides.
