Five people were killed and 16 others wounded in separate attacks in central and eastern Iraq on Wednesday, the police said.

In the early hours of the day, gunmen wearing military uniforms broke into the house of Shakir al-Hamdani, a leader of an Awakening Council group in Abu Ghraib area, some 20 km west of Baghdad, killing him with his wife, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The Awakening Council group, or Sahwa in Arabic, consists of armed groups, including some powerful anti-U.S. Sunni insurgent groups which fought al-Qaida militants in the Sunni Arab areas after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

In central Iraq, gunmen in a speedy car threw a hand grenade on a police checkpoint in the city of Samarra, some 120 km north of Baghdad, killing one policeman and wounding three others, a local police source anonymously told Xinhua.

In Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, gunmen planted a bomb in the house of a former police officer in al-Tahrir area in southern the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, killing one of his children and wounding two family members, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In addition, a child was killed and another seriously wounded in a bomb explosion near their house in al-Mafraq area, west of Baquba, he said.

In a separate incident, a roadside bomb detonated in front of the house of a local police officer, in a village near Baquba, wounding three of his family members, the source added.

Also in the province, two soldiers, two policemen and three civilians were wounded when four roadside bombs separately ripped through Baquba, the source said.

Iraqi cities have been plagued by several attacks, including suicide bombings, since the U.S. troops pulled out of the country earlier last month.
