Several Tunisian towns saw protests and sit-ins in recent days, demanding social aid and more jobs, which posed a threat to the region's security and economy, local media reported Tuesday.

On Tuesday, protesters blocked the road linking the towns of El Kef and Jendouba, some 170 kms northwest of the capital Tunis, asking for greater social aid, as well as jobs for unemployed young people in the region, forcing shops and public buildings to close, official TAP news agency said.

Also on Tuesday, a general strike was reported in the northern town of Nefza, where a group of unemployed block access to the main road between Nefza and the tourist resort of Tabarka, protesting against marginalization and poverty. Troops were deployed to prevent looting and violence.

On Monday, protests were seen in the western governorate of Siliana and the border area of Ghardimaou west of El Kef, TAP reported Tuesday, adding vandalism and looting had taken place and 17 people were arrested in relation with the unrest in Ghardimaou.
