At least five people were injured when some unidentified militants hurled hand grenades in a commercial area in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi on Saturday, local media reported.
The hand grenade attack took place at about 11:40 a.m. local time when two militants on a motorbike hurled hand grenades at a shop in Liaquatabad area, a town located in the central part of Karachi, local Urdu TV channel Express reported.
Inspector General Police Imran Yaqoob told media that the attack seems to be carried out by extortion mafia and the city police had kicked off a search operation to catch the culprits.
Extortion mafia has been active in Karachi for years. Several political parties and banned religious organizations are reportedly involved in collecting extortion from businessmen, traders and industrialists in the city.
In last December, a large number of traders held a strong protest in the same area against incidents of extortion and the threats given to them by extortionist mafia.
