China said on Wednesday that it hopes Serbia and Kosovo to maintain and further their dialogue so as to resolve outstanding issues in a peaceful way.
Wang Min, deputy permanent representative of China to the UN, made the remarks at a Security Council meeting on United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK).
Noting that various parties have made efforts to ease the tension in northern Kosovo recently, Wang said that the root causes of the tension in the region have yet to be eliminated.
"The situation in northern Kosovo remains fragile. The risk of further escalations still exists," he said.
"We hope that parties concerned will come to full realization of the sensitivity and complexity of the situation, act with caution, settle their difference through dialogue and avoid any unilateral action that might further exacerbate the situation," the ambassador said.
On the question of the Kosovo, Wang said that it is the consistent view of China that mutually acceptable solution should be sought within the framework of Security Council Resolution 1244 and on the basis of dialogue among various parties.
He said that China hopes that parties concerned "will increase their efforts, maintain and further their dialogue which is not only in the interest of parties themselves and the well-beings of their people, but will also contribute to the peace and stability of the Balkan region as well as the entire Europe."
Stressing that China is extremely concerned about the illicit trafficking in human organs in Kosovo, Wang said that any violations of international law and international humanitarian law are intolerable.
China understands the reasonable concerns of Serbia and supports the opening of a United Nations inquiry into this matter, he said.
He added that China supports the continued work of the UNMIK in line with the mandate conferred upon it by the Security Council, and calls for a greater role for it in solving the problems in Kosovo.
