The Egyptian authorities arrested Wednesday al-Qaida senior leader Seif al-Adel after his arrival at the Cairo International Airport from Pakistan, official news agency MENA reported.
Egypt's security forces were informed about the arrival of al- Adel, whose real name was Mohamed Ibrahem Mekkawi, so they monitored all the planes from East Asia, said official sources in the airport.
Al-Adel has been wanted since 1994 by the Egyptian authorities over charges of involvement in an extremist group. He was reported to have served as temporary leader of al-Qaida briefly after the group's former chief Osama bin Laden was killed in May 2011 by U.S. forces in Pakistan.
Adel was once an officer in the Egyptian special forces.
