Spanish state television network RTVE confirmed on Saturday that Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo made a visit to Mali on Friday to secure the release of two Spanish aid workers kidnapped by groups linked to Al Qaeda.

Enric Gonlayons and Ainhoa Fernandez de Rincon were taken from a refugee camp in the south of Algeria in late October 2011 along with an Italian colleague Rosella Urru.

Spain confirmed shortly after the kidnap that the hostages were alive and they are thought to be kept somewhere close to Mali's border with Niger.

The news of Garcia Margallo's visit to Mali comes the same day when Italian media quoted police sources from Sardinia, where Rosella Urru's family live, that she has been released.

This has still to be confirmed by the Italian government.
