Up to 27 policemen and three gunmen were killed in an attack against Iraqi police in the city of Haditha in Iraq's western province of Anbar Monday, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua.

Gunmen in uniforms launched the attack during the early hours this morning against a police checkpoint in the city of Haditha, some 200 km away from the capital city of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The police exchanged fire with the gunmen and killed three of them, while the rest fled to an unknown place, the source added.

The restive Anbar province, bordering Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, was a stronghold for Sunni insurgents like al-Qaida.
