Russian security forces have thwarted a bombing attack attempt in the volatile North Caucasus region, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) said Wednesday.

In a raid on an illegal laboratory in Nalchik, capital of the Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria early Wednesday, security troops found nine home-made bombs, highly explosive substances and different instruments and gadgets.

"The total amount of the self-made explosive devices was equivalent to more than 100 kilograms of TNT. According to bomb experts, an explosion of that power would have destroyed a whole city block," the NAC said in a statement.

All bombs were defused, the NAC said, adding that preliminary information showed that militants were plotting "subversive-terrorist acts" in Nalchik.

Violence is common in Russia's North Caucasus, especially in republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently mounting attacks against police officers and authorities.
